Lively period adventure, set in the turbulent days of the French Revolution with hero Jean-Paul Belmondo in his element in a brisk series of picaresque encounters in France, having returned from exile in America to get a divorce from his wife. Belmondo adds a sly touch of humour to his escapades and Marlène Jobert as his wife is a glamorous and excellent foil. Claude Renoir's cinematography provides a series of dazzling images as befits the son of painter Pierre Auguste Renoir and the photographer of such good-looking pictures as 'The River' and 'Blood and Roses'.
