This history of MGM musicals gives us rather too much of its commentators and rather too little of the actual films, but it's a small quibble at a magnificent spectrum of musical entertainment, with such inevitable gems as Gene Kelly singing in the rain being balanced by such amusing oddities as Cary Grant, James Stewart and Clark Gable exercising their tonsils in rare bursts of song. The film is also a feast for Judy Garland fans. It seems to take in something from almost every MGM film she made.
