Director George Lucas' first film, and almost as good as his two subsequent hits, American Graffiti and Star Wars. This is a more serious, very 1984-like science-fiction thriller, although the director shows the same schoolboy relish at unveiling the special effects in his cinematic box of tricks, the same enthusiasm for entertaining his audience, that made his later features so enjoyable. And Robert Duvall's final flight from robot police is as exciting as anything in Star Wars.
