You'll find many extraordinarily funny moments in this gem of a comedy about a Russian submarine that runs aground off America. It's in the Russians' panic that the fun chiefly lies. Lots of face-twitching, grunting and the Russians' broken English helps build a mountain of laughter. Seldom has a comic jigsaw had so many perfectly fitting pieces. There's a magnificent little cameo involving a garrulous old woman captured by the Russians. Her husband, old, doddery and deaf, comes down and eats his breakfast, blissfully unaware that the old harridan is making frantic efforts to free herself from a position on top of the wardrobe just over his right shoulder. One feels it's probably the first morning's peace the old man's ever had in his life.
