A triumph of visual imagination, but a mishmash of storytelling, Dune, from the marvellous Frank Herbert novel, is cast in bold strokes, but seems in many parts to be overshadowed by George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy, especially Return of the Jedi. As might be expected from the director of Eraserhead and The Elephant Man, David Lynch, the monstrosities are amazing (especially the sandworms, and the Supreme Being, a cross between a giant millipede and a maggot), and dwelt upon with some relish. But you'll need your thinking caps on to follow the plot, and even who is doing what to whom. As for the opening narration by Virginia Madsen, as the princess, which is meant to explain it all, it makes less sense than one of Ronnie Barker's tongue-twisting monologues. Watch for Star Trek's Patrick Stewart in a star-studded supporting cast.
