An absorbing and suspenseful reconstruction of the Watergate affair, which would culminate in the downfall of President Nixon.
Director Alan J Pakula shapes the gripping story with his usual emphasis on urban paranoia.
The star charisma of Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford never detracts from the considerable documentary detail which, despite its many excellences, would have been better with a more audible dialogue track, less murky photography and a clearer introduction to the characters concerned.
The acting, however, is a treat: Hoffman and Redford couldn't be better, and Jason Robards won an Oscar as their editor.
As history in the making, it deserves the attention of everyone. Look out for Amadeus star F Murray Abraham in an early role as an arresting officer.
