This story of a compulsive extramarital relationship from director François Truffaut is successful in every respect save one: it doesn't make one care about the characters. That said, the film is superbly well made, a compassionate though sombre and finally startling study of human nature and emotions, and the sometimes frightening consequences when they aren't kept under control. Nicely acted by Gérard Depardieu and (especially) Fanny Ardant, and exquisitely shot in Fujicolor by William Lubtchansky.
