Dr Watson goes to see his old friend Sherlock Holmes to find him not only deep in the throes of cocaine addiction, but also paranoid and rambling. By a ruse, Watson gets Holmes to travel to Vienna where he meets young Dr Sigmund Freud. But when one of Freud's other patients, an attractive redhead, is abducted, the game's afoot. Nicol Williamson is certainly a Holmes you haven't seen before and this tale may offend some Holmes purists. But that doesn't stop it being a thoroughly good yarn. Robert Duvall makes an excellent Watson despite not being an obvious choice for the part, and Alan Arkin is enjoyable as Freud. A starry cast which includes Laurence Olivier, Vanessa Redgrave, Joel Grey, Samantha Eggar, Jeremy Kemp and Charles Gray, adds to the enjoyment and director Herbert Ross keeps the (admittedly sometimes thin) story thundering along at an exciting pace.

This must be one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes films mainly due to the fantastic acting from Nicol Williamson I am a Sherlock Holmes freak and have many of the films on video and DVD. This film appears to be very elusive and rarely shown on TV and I certainly cannot locate it anywhere to buy? This film is rather unusual in the Sherlock Holmes genre and is a must see for all fans as it certainly shows the darker side to the master sleuth. I agree for the purists it may offend but not to me!
