There's more than a touch of eccentricity in this film about the struggling denizens of the artists' quarter in downtown Manhattan. Bernadette Peters is excellent in the pivotal role (and thank God there is one) of the near-normal 'working girl' hat designer who can't get over her crush on her live-in lover, a batty artist whose petty jealousies are hardly compatible with his own double standards in matters of the heart. She's a much better person than him, but her grasshopper mind can't take the concept. Offered drugs at a party, she parries with 'No thanks, I have enough trouble with regular reality.' For the rest, it's what original author Tama Janowitz says it is: 'Everyone pursuing everyone else in a desperate quest for - something intangible, the pursuit of happiness and a better apartment.' A bit of a jumble, the resultant trip through the artistic jungle, but with Ms Peters to guide us, the safari is at least rarely dull. Murder One fans will spot Stanley Tucci and Anthony LaPaglia in the supporting cast.
