A semi-surrealist, semi-satirical, semi-documentary, semi-successful and all-round weird film by David Byrne and Talking Heads, which resembles nothing so much as a Fellini picture made by an American in the heart of Texas. Striking images and the occasional nervous giggle mingle with stretches of tedium, as Byrne's quirky eye and the ravishing photography of Ed Lachman take in the rather strange goings-on among 'a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas' as they prepare for the state's 150th anniversary. Most of them are about one degree removed from the sanitarium, especially a lady who spends all her time in bed until she sees the man she wants to marry on TV. Bizarre to say the least: on this form Byrne could have become a cult director. In the event, it never happened.
