Based loosely on the real-life unsolved murder case of actress Elizabeth Short who was known as the Black Dahlia, this crime drama, set initially in the 1960s but then mainly in 1948, proves absorbing, intelligent entertainment. Robert De Niro is on superb form as a Catholic priest and Robert Duvall is even better as his bitter cop brother. Together they become involved in a grisly murder hunt that leaves scars on them both. The case also provided the basis of the script for Brian De Palma's 2006 film, The Black Dahlia.
