A chance meeting in a Los Angeles tower block led Hernandez landing his big Hollywood break.
Fellow lift passenger - talent manager Howard Tyner - signed him on the spot after convincing him of a showbiz career.
He made his TV series debut in 1998 as Antonio Lopez, one of the high school basketball players, in the NBC Saturday morning teen sitcom Hang Time.
Hernandez moved to MTV with the short-term role of pizza delivery guy Eddie on the popular late-night serial Undressed before segueing to the big screen.
Although he shot roles in two movies (Living the Life and Joy Ride) in 2000, neither had been released before his first lead role hit the multiplexes.
In 2001, Hernandez co-starred with Kirsten Dunst in the teen romance crazy/beautiful, portraying stalwart, straight-A high school student Carlos Nunez.
He was next up in the effective teen horror movie Roadtrip and played opposite Dennis Quaid in the Disney movie The Rookie.
In 2004, he starred alongside Ice Cube in movie and the fire-fighting drama Ladder 49 with Joaquin Phoenix.
Recent work includes the American football drama Friday Night Lights with Billy Bob Thornton.
