A typically disturbing piece about violence and human reactions from director Michael Haneke. Beginning with a mass murder, it then flashes back several months to trace the actions of various characters involved prior to the attack. The sense of impending doom is more effective than in The Seventh Continent, and the result is a slow-burning, tense drama.
