Centred on one particular car journey through France, but mixed with numerous scenes set in various times in the past, this comedy concerns the superficial changes that come over a young married couple. The dialogue is incisively accurate on the moods, manners and morals of modern life but, despite the problems of the couple involved, it's very much a `pro-marriage' story. Author Frederic Raphael admitted that he first hit on the idea while on a drive through France with his wife, but resisted the suggestion that it might be any more autobiographical than any of his other writing. Fine acting by Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn, with some scene-stealing by Eleanor Bron and the ineffably fussy William Daniels.
