It's fair to say that we would all like to see Smeagol take control of the wicked little being that is Gollum.

We live in the hope that this little creature will redeem himself before the story ends. And whether he does or not depends on your point of view, suffice to say that he really is the hero of the story, without whom the ending may not have been so happy.
